Lemonly Critical Reception, Budgets, & Box Office Performance for 2026 Horror Movies
MicrocontentHorror had a monster year at the box office in 2026, and some of the biggest hits came from the smallest budgets. We wanted to know how much critics had to do with it, so we dug into the numbers behind the year's horror releases.
We created this scatterplot to visualize each film's Rotten Tomatoes against its return on budget, showing how critical reception and box office performance both impact each film's success. Icons indicate the source material (originals, series, adaptations, and remakes). Fitting it all on one chart called for a log scale, since the range is wild: Obsession earned nearly 700 times its $750,000 budget, while Her Private Hell recouped less than a fifth of its own.
Ultimately, cheap and well-reviewed won big, but great reviews couldn't save every budget. The full dataset is linked below for anyone who wants to dig into the gory details.
