Lemonly The Rise of Streaming TV: Emmy Nominations for the Top 10 Networks Since 2016

The Emmys honor the best and buzziest TV shows of the year. In the streaming era, traditional networks and streaming providers are both vying for the most hardware.

We crunched the numbers to track total Emmy nominations for the top 10 networks and streaming providers since 2016, revealing some interesting trends: HBO leads with 1309 total nominations since 2016 — almost 25% of all Emmy noms in that timeframe. Netflix has garnered more than 100 nominations each year since 2018. Apple TV has been on an upward trend in nominations since launching in 2019.FX, Hulu, and Disney+ have seen some spikes in years when an especially big show breaks through, like Shogun, Only Murders in the Building, and WandaVision.

Using a small multiples chart helped us visualize the trends and spikes per streamer while allowing easy comparison between them, since seeing the exact count of nominations every year isn’t as important as gauging the overall volume and trends. An Emmys-inspired color palette and background pattern add a touch of the silver screen.
