Every year, our Slice interns pick a topic that lets them flex their storytelling chops. For the first time, our 2026 intern cohort created an explainer video instead of an infographic — it was a great fit for their mix of talents (content, design, animation, and video). This fearsome foursome set their sights on something impossible to miss: the Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship ever built.

This explainer video breaks down the ship's jaw-dropping scale, from its length and weight to its daily fuel consumption, then shows how it keeps 10,000 guests and crew fed and entertained across 15 venues. It's a fast, fact-packed tour of a vessel so massive it makes the Titanic look like a rowboat. To match the ship's larger-than-life personality, we blended video, photography, and playful animation into one mixed-media style.

If the Titanic was the star of the sea, then Icon of the Seas is a supernova. It’s about five times larger than its famous friend. Engineered by Royal Caribbean in 2024, Icon measures 1,198 feet long. She’s the world’s largest cruise ship.

And it’s heavy. Icon weighs 250,800 gross tons and consumes 80,000 gallons of gas a day, which is the same as filling up your four-door sedan 6,500 times.

But how does the Icon fuel its 10,000 guests and crew members? Passengers consume 30,000 meals per day across 15 venues, including themed bars and a Broadway-style music hall.

And Royal Caribbean isn’t done. Bigger ships are already in the works — which means Icon may not hold its title for long. The ocean better make some room.
